Nearly back from the brink

10.3 run by Kevin at Garmin Connect - Details

Sorry lads that 8am start was way to early for me on a Saturday morning but sounds like you were probably better off without me.

So first long run today after a big break. IT band felt pretty good upto 5 miles where I had to stop and do some stretches. This evening I can really feel it though and it feels like something is burning in hip so that's not good but I'm ignoring it and it will go away. Conditions were great today - warmish, slight cool breeze and overcast. The thing I'm most proud of today was my steady pace. I have found that this is pace I run at when I do LSR's and I don't seem to be able to change so I'm not going to try. Unfortunately the battery in the Garmin ran out at 7 miles so the rest is the 10.3 is a estimation from Google maps.

Stevo on his Ownio

Well, what can i say. Had another hamstring injuryon tuesday night. (Mental note: must give up the football). Wasn't able to mange anything during the week.

So here you have it all rolled into one outing.

I'll add in my race Report here... and keep it short; Training before this event was limited, my fricken achilles only setled down about a week before hand, but I had a good weeks training in the build up and wanted a crack at getting close to my PB. I had a target of 32 minutes or less.

The first mile didn't feel particularly fast, but my new GPS watch read Five twenty something :O Way too fast! Little was I to know that I hadn't done a mile really though! I slowed for the next mile and that was six thirty something :O Way too Slow! So I settled at a pace in the middle of both miles for the rest of the race. I had consistently moved past people up until mile 3 and finally found myself in a group equally paced, all of whom had watches singing varies beepy tunes.

I felt strong coming into the last mile and attacked any and all hills. The aul heart rate must have been hitting max but I was comfortable enough in a fast finish. Time was Thirty one Something.... which I'm happy with even with the short measure.... and most importantly, the achilles were only a little sore.

So in conclusion- Farewell Asics Kayanos, I hated you! But will still use you... in the rain and the mud :P

New addition to the collection

I think I've a problem...

Achilles, Glasses and zoom Vomero.

I've given the Asics Kayano's a fair aul trial and don't think they're for me. An expensive trial, but a necessary one all the same. I'm still feeling something on the achilles, though not as much pain as the months before. Whenever I put on my old vomeros I feel like I'm walking on clouds, and they've done a few thousand miles! so...

I'm going back to my Vomeros, from wiggle;

Only in red... but meh!

So while I'm shopping in wiggle, I think of my 5 year old scratched and somewhat smelly blue runnning Oakleys.... they've begun to annoy me with steaming up and what not. So, (and Al, I think you were looking at running shades too?) I'm also throwing these in the basket.

They come with a selection of lens depending on the weather. I like to run with shades on anyway so the clear ones will be good for the late evening runs and as they're really cycling shades, I'll get the use out of them on the bike too. Sorted. (getting the white frames)

Adidas 5 Mile

Did everybody get their number and chip. I was away for the weekend so wasn't able to get to Blanchardstown. Didn't realise it had to be picked up on specific dates. Does anyone know if you can pick it up on the day of the race?

Clontarf Half Marathon by foleyalan at Garmin Connect - Details

Well managed to finish which a I'm delighted with. The first half of the race went quite well, hit the half way on 45.17 which was bang on what i wanted to do. When i hit the beach for the second time the wind was so feckin strong. There was a sand blizzard for 4 km and all the way back there was a 80 km/h wind blowing head on . Some of the time i felt like i wasn't even running. Check out my last mile, that has to be a record!!!!!!

Weekly Fartlek Session

Anybody interested in a weekly Fartlek session ??? Was thinking about early on Saturday or Sunday mornings. This speed session is ideal for marathon training and will help with your endurance. 9 miles at very slow pace with plenty of sprints and tempo running too. Any takers?????? For those not up to 9 miles yet, there is a 5 mile option .

Adidas Dublin Race Series

Right,

I'm entered for the 5 and 10 milers. Got a generic mass mail from Jim Augney saying they were running out of places (they had to close entries last year early). So if you want to do them- better enter ASAP if you haven't already.

I've already entered the big one in October, bib 359!

So who's in?

Saturday Slow run

Have to say suprised myself with this one. Nice and slow, average pace was 8.45. Felt really comfortable and although it was very hot. No breaks needed either which was a bonus.

Malahide Results

Hi All
On what was the worse morning for a long time 150 hardy runners showed up in Malahide castle for the Annual John Davis Run
Just under 200 entered the race with 80 or so showing up on the day to enter. The race was won in a great time of 16.31 by David Byrne with the first Woman Cindy Kelly home in a fantastic time of 18.55 (9th 0verall).
I would like to thank everyone who helped taking enteries and on the course mainly, Mags & Darragh Wallnutt, Sio, Judy, Geraldine,Johanna, Sarah Duffy, Mr Duffy, Jenny & Gerry. A special mention for all of Gavin Duffy's help. Not only did he have to put up with all my phone calls he also arranged the timing clock, Starbucks coffee, the biscuits & chocolate, fruit hampers, banana's and marked the course. He then got to race coming in 7th place! Without his help this race would not have been successful.
This is a race Piranha should continue and if fact Fingal Co Co & Malahide Parks would like to see expand or more of them. I am happy to organise again next year but with anything like this the more help you get the easier it is
On behalf of the charities and myself thank you for all the support.

Johnny W.

P.S. There are some more pics posted in the media gallery.

Half Marathon Training

Right, as I said in my last post, I have signed up to complete the Half Marathon. I'm a little bit nervous and believe I may have overstepped the mark this time round. I know for most of you this is only a small achievement, but for me, it might as well be the marathon.

So, what I need from you guys, is an awful lot of help. I can manage the couple of runs midweek myself, but I need some guidance for a proper training plan. I have searched across the internet and it all varies. My thinking is you guys know me best, and have a fair idea of what i can do. So, could you help and tell mewhats best for me.

Bare in mind, the furthest I have ever run is 7 miles, and that was only once. I'm still only at a 5 mile level of comfort. Anything over that and I'm struggling.

Looking forward to your wisdom.

Thanks in advance.

Steve.

Adidas Series

Just signed myself up for 2 of the 3 events. Not here for the Frank Duffy 10 mile. Will be only arriving back from Italy that afternoon, so will miss out on that one. I'll be looking for some assistance from you lot to get me up to the Half Marathon. Bare in mind I've only run 7 miles max so far. Loads of time so should be ok.

Needed to sign up to something to keep me going.

IMRA Avonbeg circuit

This was a non marked circuit around the Wicklow mountains. Was suppose to be 25KM but since I got lost, not surprisingly, I added on 3KM. The girl in front of me is from the army and saved me from being lost but she got me lost in the first place. Hard run the day before my 100KM M3 Cycle. Was a tough weekend. Feeling it now.

    Last weekend of hard training!

So... a Saturday 5 mile and a Sunday Howth Hill are on offer.

I know Al has his K club 10K on Saturday, but his training thread on boards says himself and Mark are on for Howth on Sunday.

I'm hoping for a fast 5 mile in malahide (maybe 1 slow, 1 fast, 1 slow...) on the Saturday, and a slow climb on the Sunday. No start times in mind.

    Who's on for what?
