    Last weekend of hard training!

So... a Saturday 5 mile and a Sunday Howth Hill are on offer.

I know Al has his K club 10K on Saturday, but his training thread on boards says himself and Mark are on for Howth on Sunday.

I'm hoping for a fast 5 mile in malahide (maybe 1 slow, 1 fast, 1 slow...) on the Saturday, and a slow climb on the Sunday. No start times in mind.

    Who's on for what?

Alan's (not so) secret training schedule

So I've started to read boards to get some advice on my poor running style on the mountains and look what I found in the Training logs:

The Alan Foley training log. Time to follow in his foot steps.

Great Ireland Run. Very Tough. Mostly uphill!

    Workout Details - SportyPal

    Very Tough. Mostly uphill!

    Well if everyone's going nuts...

Not to be outdone by the "great Ireland run" or the Skerries trekers- Karl and I did the "big one in Howth" in 1hour 28 mins I believe. Good weekend team CAC, we have those Foleys worried.

    Saturday - Steve & Neil - Skerries

Myself and Neil just put ourselves through the paces.Difficult one today in the heat. But we made it, just.

I have to add that miles 1 to 3.5 were all uphill. According to Neil there was just one more corner. Liar. Very difficult, but once you get up, it's all down thank god.

    IMRA events

IMRA race number 2 - Black Mountain

    Sunday 11th March 2010

After my first escapades out with the IMRA group of running the Wicklow way trail run (26KM) I thought that this run couldn't be any harder but was I wrong. My first worries started seeping in when I saw how few people there were for the race meaning that this wasn't going to be an easy run. We started at 1215 once the oldest man I had ever seen running turned up at the start line (he was in the over 80s category) and off we went. The start was all uphill and after 1 KM I was in the top 10 and feeling good but was definitely going too fast. These guys around me were machines and I was just a newbie. After 2KM I had fallen back a bit but had found some sort of a rhythm until we had to go off trail where we were up and down over hills and mountains. Also getting stuck in mud and walking when the mountain got too tough.

The good thing about doing mountain running is that generally the up is the hard part so you just keep pushing your way to the top. On my way up I stuffed a power gel into my mouth which really helped. On the way down I was by myself most of the way and found myself lost due to poor mountain markings which was annoying when you running out of energy. After a few minutes I found my way and was off again. The downhill running is an art that I haven't mastered as one of the runner just thunders past me . I kept trying to run in different ways but being wrecked and sore doesn't help. Crossing the line was a sweet feeling.

Overall I beat the 1hr30mins and got in the top 20 out of 40 so I was pretty happy but always areas for improvements.

    My results and my pics

    Run to work this morning

Ran to work this morning. 11.34KM at a pretty decent pace. The thing I was more happy about was the consistency of my pace bar 1 km where I went over 5min a KM which was due to the damn traffic lights. Other than I was doing between 4.30 - 5 min per KM. It's a tough run because it's first thing in the morning and I generally don't eat before I leave so I'm mainly running on empty. My Android phone keeps me company on the way in with some podcasts to redirect my thoughts away from the pain. It also kindly tells me the distance I have run and the time it has taken which is nice if I not dying and thinking "jaysus there is a good bit to go".

Check out todays work out and work outs from the past from here.

Anyone got any good tips for morning foods that won't make me vomit on my run?

    More Group Running

So I'm just back from a work run of about 4 miles at a reasonably comfortable pace. It was boring. It's always boring. Same boring pond, same boring unfinished roads. Same songs on the ipod (ok that's my fault). Same. Same. Same.

So I figure it was particularly more boring this time because I've had company on my last two runs, Good Friday Howth run and the Bank Holiday Raheny run. What do people think of trying to get out one evening per week as well as the weekend runs? Maybe in Clongriffin park, or incorporating the coast road etc.
